Roland Garros 2026 has unfolded in the shadow of absences. Some of the sport's most compelling players are watching from the sidelines, not by choice but by injury. Their recoveries raise a question worth asking carefully: what does the nutritional science around musculoskeletal repair actually tell us?

What the Research Specifically Shows on Achilles Healing

A 2025 study published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine examined the effect of omega-3 supplementation combined with aerobic exercise on Achilles tendon healing following surgical repair. The combined intervention group showed measurably superior markers of tendon regeneration compared to exercise alone or a control, with improved collagen fibre organisation and reduced levels of the inflammatory markers TNF-alpha and IL-1 beta. The researchers concluded that omega-3 supplementation alongside graduated rehabilitation may accelerate Achilles tendon recovery.

Separately, research into fish oil's anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties in tendon tissue has confirmed that EPA and DHA inhibit the production of eicosanoids derived from arachidonic acid, the prostaglandins and leukotrienes that drive chronic inflammatory states. In the context of Achilles repair, where incomplete resolution of inflammation is associated with inferior collagen organisation and elevated re-rupture risk, this mechanism is directly relevant.

Post-surgical inflammation more broadly has also been examined. A systematic review of studies on omega-3 administration in surgical patients found consistent reductions in circulating CRP and interleukin-6 levels in those who received EPA and DHA supplementation relative to controls. Earlier supplementation initiation, ideally pre-operatively, was associated with stronger attenuation of the inflammatory response.
